Videos run within PowerPoint presentations appear very dark. This began last
week when I had a PowerPoint presentation crash and the software went into
the “safe mode.” I re-booted the computer, restarted PowerPoint taking it out
of the safe mode, and the problem with the dark movies appeared.

Running movies via the MS player work just fine. It is only when they are
shown through PowerPoint that they are dark.

I removed and re-installed MS Office twice, and ran a repair routine in
PowerPoint in an attempt to fix the problem. I have gone on-line looking for
answers as well, and I cannot figure it out.

I would download and reinstall Windows Media Player.  Although it is not
used directly in PPT, reinstalling should clean up your problem.
