Hi, I've been asked to change the colors in some shapes from bright red,
yellow and green to lighter colors. I am about to change them one by one but
this is a 150 slide presentation with over 1000 shapes and this will take
hours to do. Is there a way to define a format and change them all at once?

If you use colors from PPT's color scheme, then changing the scheme color will
change the color of all shapes that use the theme color.

The theme colors are the top row of 8 "chips" you see when you use one of the
line/fill/text color tools on the drawing toolbar.  When you hover the mouse
over them, the tooltips will tell you which scheme color each chip represents

If you only need to deal with a couple colors, that might be sufficient.

For a lot more flexibility, have a look at our ShapeStyles add-in
http://www.pptools.com/shapestyles/
The free demo lets you give it a pretty good workout on up to five styles
