It's a bug, for the time being there is not much we can do about it. Let us
hope MS fixes it in the near future.

It's a bug, and it's incredibly annoying. I know I'm sure hoping it gets
fixed in a service pack or other patch.
Until then, maybe use the Selection and Visibility pane (Home | Select |
Selection Pane) to hide the objects. Then run the document inspector (Office
Button | Prepare | File Inspector) and let it delete the hidden items.

Thank you for the response, I will give the "hide the objects" work around a
crack and wait for the changes to be made to the software - hopefully
Difficult to understand how such a fundamental requirement slipped through
the review processes
