How do I change the template on a ppt someone else created?

If I apply a design template it overlays what's already in the slides, it
doesn't replace it.

Hi Graham,
   In PPT 2003 you can go to View-->Master-->Slide Master then apply
the  design by going to Format-->Slide Design. This should replace the
"template" slide design on the presentation. If you need me to be
clearer, please let me know.
