what type of pictures can I ungroup

Usually vector graphics (EMF, WMF) can be ungrouped. Bitmap/raster images
like PNG, JPG, BMP can't -- unless maybe they've been grouped with a textbox
or autoshape on the slide. You can usually ungroup those types of things.
