Most inserted videos go black during slide show, but audio works. I have
windows vista.

Try putting the video in the same folder as the pres BEFORE you insert it.
This folder should have a short path ideally something like c:\ppts but the
desktop is usually OK. If his still fails you migh want to look

Thanks for your suggestion. I decided to download playsforcertain, and this
did the trick.

Powerpoint will only correctly play certain formats.  If this is mpeg2, at
least here it does what you report.

Mpeg 1 and wmv with appropriate parameters works.  You can also embed
Windows Media Player through the Developer/Tools menus...this works with
more formats and gives you more control.
