smooth slide transitions

I'm using PP 2002 SP3, and have a show with about 100 slides, lots of images,
a number of animations of Autoshapes. Total file size is about 13 MB.

We'd like to use the old simple "fade smoothly" transition between slides,
but it fades, but not smoothly. I developed the show on my desktop station,
running at about 3 Gig, and the transitions look pretty good on the old CRT
display. On the laptop, running about 2 Gig, slow transitions are very
noticible, and even fast is not smooth. When projected, the effect is even
more pronounced. I thought these transitions had been around forever, and
wonder why they can't really be smooth. We've gone back to "no transition"
so our audience will pay attention to the images, and not the jerkiness.

Is this a common problem? I have the images optimized (each is less than
200k) so I can't really shrink the file any more. I'm running right off the
desktop, so there is no issue of pulling the data off a network. Any advice
or condolences would be appreciated.

Do you have 'use hardware graphics acceleration' turned ON or OFF

Try swapping it around.

Thanks, TAJ. I did not find a simple check box for this feature. Here's
where I went: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display, Settings (under
Display), Advanced, Troubleshooting. There I found a Hardware Acceleration
dialog box with a sliding scale. It was set to Full. I moved it to None.
The show seems to run quite smoothly on the small screen, and is smoother,
but not perfect, when projected. I'll have a larger audience in a couple
days, and will post back in a week or so whether the result was well
accepted. A few random people grabbed out of the hallway haven't gasped at
the show, so we're hoping we who are building it are just hypersensitive and
looking for the tiny jumps, and real people won't notice.

Randy,
I think TAJ was referring to the setting in powerpoint itself (as opposed to
the windows control panel).
You'll find it under Slide Show>Set Up Show in the pull-down menus. At the
bottom of the
dialog are the "performance" settings. Ticking the "use hardware graphics
acceleration" usually makes
slide transitions much smoother. You'll have to also make sure that the
control panel settibngs are also
set to "full".

In addition to TAJ & Landy's advice, check your video card driver is up to
date.

Thanks for all the help and clarifications. As promised, I'm back after the
live show. The changes I described in response to TAJ seem to have worked,
which might just prove again that there are many ways to get to something in
Windows. The show was projected on a 9 foot wide screen, and the "fade
smoothly" slide transitions worked fine. I will poke around with the
PowerPoint settings also, and see what that does. As for the drivers, at
work I'm at the mercy of my Info Management staff, who are actually very
supportive in seeing that our equipment and software are properly matched and
work well.
