I want to create spider diagrams in powerpoint but cannot find how to. I
could spend hours creating these, but the result is likely to be uneven, so
sure someone else must have found a short cut.

Try Insert => Diagram => Radial
Is this what you mean by a spider diagram?

Or do you mean:
Click Insert, Chart
Then click on Chart, Chart type and choose Radar Chart.
I alwasy thought they looked like a spider web, but I think it's meant to
look like a radar screen.

Or do you mean a spider diagram as described here:

In which case I don't think there is an automatic way - I would create it
using autoshapes. If you post back with your version I can give you a few
tips about creating them quickly, lining them up etc.
