URL Hyperlinks in Action Buttons

I've tried to create an action button (custom, with text) that links to a web
page residing in the same folder as the PPT file.  I want to use just the
file name (xyz.htm) so that the whole folder remains portable.  But
powerpoint keeps prefixing the file name with http:// resulting in a Page Not
Found error.

Such links work fine when assigned to words or phrases, pictures and other
objects... just not action buttons.

Any ideas?

Hi

Instead of using Hyperlink to -> URL..., use Hyperlink to -> Other File...

Or instead of using an action setting, use a hyperlink (ctrl+k) -> existing
file or webpage.

Hi, Lucy,

Thanks for the quick response.  Hope you're having a nice summer!

Your first suggestion results in the complete path to the target file in the
link: C:\projects\customer26\xyz.htm.  Clearly, this won't work when I upload
to my web server or burn the project file to a CD.

Your second suggestion, ctrl-K, when focused on the action button simply
opens the same Action Settings dialogue box with the same problem.

I know that I can draw a button object and assign to it a hyperlink, but it
won't have the 3-D animation of the action button that's desirable and
consistent with he other action buttons I use in the navigation.

FYI, I'm using PPT 2003.

ANy other ideas?

Hello

As long as the files are in the same folder you should be fine. I have
tested moving the whole folder & links didn't break, and I tested uploading
the two files to my website & it worked just fine too (you can have a look
here but it's not pretty http://www.aneasiertomorrow.com.au/test.htm). The CD
won't be a problem - you just have to tick 'include linked files' under
options.

Summer is great thanks - currently 33 degrees C outside :-) I think that's

Have a look here:

Show me the link and let me edit it
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00433.htm

As long as the linked file is in the same folder as the PPT, you should be able to
use the suggestions there to edit the link; remove the drive and path but leave the
file name.  I think that might be all it takes.

But avoid filenames with spaces or other unusual punctuation if you want this to
work reliably.
