When I'm in the design template task pane, I'm not seeing a "thumbnail" of
the available designs.  When I place my mouse on the task pane, it shows me a
box that is blank and it does give me an option of "Applying to the slides"
but I can't see what design I'll be applying to the slides until I chosen it.

There's a lot of info on this here: http://pptfaq.com/FAQ00779.htm
If anything works for you please report back so it can be shared.

Outlook as used as my company's e-mail so I have it up all day.  I closed
Outlook and VOILA, I have design template previews in the Task Pane.

Thanks so much for the information...IT WORKED!

Good news.  If so, you may still be able to leave Outlook running if you like.
Try changing its settings NOT to use Word as your email editor.
Or if you really really want to use Word as the email editor, try disabling any
end/footnote addins in Word.  That may sort things in ... really, no kidding ...
PowerPoint.
