When I attempt to place a text box, the box appears below the little cross
hairs and not where I intended.  Is this a problem with my settings or simply
a bug in powerpoint 2007?

Hi

It's a bug - we saw it in the Help Centre at PPTLive & it was reported to
MS. I've just had a play and textboxes seem to snap to guides ok but not the
grid (well, some bits of the grid but not others...) so try using the guides
instead - you can create up to 8 vertical & 8 horizontal by holding ctrl
while you drag them.
