Whenever I open PowerPoint 2003 in normal view with the slides down the left
side and the current slide in the main window, the design template does not
show on the main window.  It shows on all the slides on the left and shows
perfectly in the slide show, but not in the edit window.  Is there a setting
to control this function?

You might try changing your hardware acceleration.

I unchecked the hardware acceleration on the setup show window and this did
nothing, but I will try from the system icon.
