I am having a problem trying to fully embed fonts when converting a PP 2007
project to a PDF that I am sending to a book printer.  Apparently, MS doesn't
fully embed the more common fonts in this version using their PDF add-on.  Is
there a way to manually make it embed the fonts (I've already tried going
into the saving options and checking the embed option there - it didn't
work...)

Won't the more common fonts be available on the book printer's PC?

In other words, it may be a non-issue.

But if that doesn't fly, try another means of making PDFs.  Acrobat's the gold
standard, of curse ... er ... course, but there are other less expensive or even
free solutions.  Jaws PDF Creator, PrimoPDF, GhostScript, etc.
