I have been asked to update an older presentation to a new layout. I have a
template with the new Slide Master and page layouts. I had hoped to be able
to open both and by using 2 monitors be able to copy and paste from the old
to the new.
However there has to be an easier way. But I can't seem to be able to open
both presentations simultaneously - they both open in the same window.
How do you copy a custom template from one presentation to another in Office
2007 and Win XP?

In addition to Echo's suggestion, try this:
Open a copy of your presentation.
Click the Design tab on the ribbon bar
To the right of the group that displays the theme previews there's a slider bar
and below that a downward facing arrow head that opens up the themes gallery.
SnideNote: Can we go back to the old way of doing things where we could just
give the menu commands and be done with it in three or four words? No? Dang.
We now return you to our regularly scheduled verbose exposition.
At the bottom of the Themes gallery, click "Browse for themes"
Browse to where your template file is stored and choose it. That'll apply your
template to the presentation in one shot. No need to copy stuff from
presenation to presentation.

This worked great except for the master slide but compared to the other 25
slides that was no big deal to change! And I soooo.... agree with your
comment about the ribbon. If only I could have the old menus running
parallel until I figure out the convoluted logic behind the ribbons!
Thanks,
Mich

There's a file that shows the ribbon equivalents to the earlier toolbar
commands, and there are several add-ins that let 2007 mimic the old toolbar
command structure.
There are links and such here:
