I am trying to have an icon in my Powerpoint presentation that when clicked
will direct the user to a different part of the presentation.  For example,
if the first page asked "Are you male or female?" clicking male would direct
you to a Male specific follow up page and Female specific page, each then
branching again from there.  Thanks for the help.

Give the icons a mouse click action setting of "Hyperlink to Slide xx"

In 2007 Insert > Action
In other versions
SlidesShow > Action Settings
(Helps to state the version you use!)
