how do I remove page #s when I tried and failed frm headers&footer

There is a page number at the bottom right on my presentation and i can not
get it off.
I go to header and footer and the box is empty.  Yet I still show the page
number.
It is not in text box mode so I can not ajust it.

It would help to mention the version of PowewrPoint. One possibility is that
someone has put a textbox on the slide master and inserted a"slide number"
into it.
