PowerPoint 2007 - Slide Number Placeholder

pp 2007 seems to place a slide number placeholder in the bottom right of
every new slide...

even if it is removed from the master ???

Yes, that's pretty much it, nothing you can do about it. The advantage is
that you have better control over slide numbers. You can move  them, delete
them or put them in front of pictures.
