The media Clips toolbar is not even available.  It won't allow me to add a
sound or media.  I have the 2007 version and I run Vista

Can you please try a VBA and see whether it allows u to insert sound through
macro

Sub InsertMedia()
ActivePresentation.Slides(1).Shapes.AddMediaObject ("C:\desperatar.wma")
End Sub

It says that powerpoint could not open the file.  On the insert ribbon, there
is not much that I can actually use.  I can see all the icons, but not all of
them are available for me to use.

Can you just replace file name C:\desperatar.wma with a valid sound file path
from your system and try it

Before you go to vba try making sure that you have a slide selected in the
slide thumbnails.

You say many icons are grayed out, is this a trial copy of Office?
