I've followed these instructions on "turn autofit text on or off":

Click the Microsoft Office Button , click PowerPoint Options, and then click
Proofing.
Under AutoCorrect options, click AutoCorrect Options.
Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab, and then under Apply as you type, do
the following.....etc.

However, all 3 autofit options remain "grayed out" under "format text
effects" !!!!   I want to take control on this and ppt2007 won't let me.  Pls
help!!!  I've searched everywhere and cannot find an answer.

Can you clarify what you mean by "format text effects"?

You were able to turn off the autofit stuff in PPT Options, right?

When using "SmartArt," in Powerpoint 2007, right click in the the text area,
and you'll see a blue tilted letter "A" that's labelled "format text effects"
or alternatively you can right click anywhere on the SmartArt and then select
"Format Shape" then click on the bottom section that reads "Text Box" and
right next to that you'll see 3 options for Autofit which are all "greyed
out" - so my workaround was to create a separate text box and cut the text
from the "smartart imbedded text box" and paste it onto the newly created
text box - it solves the problem, but it's very time consuming and it's
dissapointing after having paid a very high price for this "latest" office
2007 software.  And, "yes" I was able to turn it off in ppt options - it just
made absolutely no difference.  Thks for your reply.

Thank you for clarifying.

SmartArt is a different animal all together -- you can't turn off that
autofitting in it. You can, though, apply a specific font size to all the
text in the SmartArt object (by selecting the object, or by selecting
individual textboxes), and it will respect that.
