I use PowerPoint very seldom, but found myself needing to do a presentation.
What I'm trying figure out is how to bring one text line in from the right
side to an existing slide.

Try this:

Highlight the text line that will fly in
In custom animation choose Add Effect > Entrance > Fly In
Change the default "from bottom" to "from right"

You should be good to go!

To get to Custom Animation depends on version (always good to mention!)
2007 Animation tab > Custom Animation

2002/3 Slide Show menu > Custom Animation
