hi, you can assign action settings to pictures and text boxes to take you to
a specific slide but is there a way to assign the slide itself so that
instead of (by default) taking you to the next slide when you click anywhere
on the current slide it takes you to a specific slide?

I hope the question is clear.

Ryan,
You could draw a shape that covers the entire slide, format it to have no
border and 99% transparency. Then assign an action setting to it using
right-click choose action setting, click listarrow next to hyperlink to,
choose slide, select slide, click OK.
