While working in PowerPoint, I will occasionally zoom in for detail work,
especially when dealing with graphics.

While zoomed in, should I ever deselect the object I am working on,
PowerPoint will automatically recenter the slide in the window, usually
forcing me to zoom out, find the piece I was working on, and zoom back in
again.

Is there a way to prevent PowerPoint from doing this?

PMPittman,
I guess you have hit one of PPT 2007 major bugs, which we hope will be
sorted in the next service pack.

Drat!  I was, obviously, hoping for a better answer. :)

And, yes, I forgot to mention but I am using PPT 2007.
