i want this fix from Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;241277

it seems i have to ring an 0870 premium rate telephone number to request it
and pay a £40 support charge?  this seems a bit of a rip-off.  is there a way
around it?

On that page, it says:

"In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be
canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update
will resolve your problem."

In all probability, there will be no charges; in any case, they'd have to ask for
a credit card number before charging you anything; at that point you can ask for
clarification before giving them the information.
