I have no office assistant character in Pub. 2003.  A message tells me to
install at least one character in maintenance mode.  I don't know what this
means.

The following steps may resolve this issue:

1. Close all applications, and click "Start" --> "Control Panel".
2. Click "Add/Remove Programs". In the list, click to choose the Microsoft
Publisher 2003, and click "Change".
3. In the next window, click "Add/Remove Features", and click "Next",
please check
"Advanced customization of appilcation"
4. Click "+" to expand "Office Shared Features".
5. There is a box beside "Office Assistants", Please click on that and
select "Not
Available".
6. Click "Update". This will uninstall Office Assistant for Publisher2003

I hope this helps!!
