I want to turn my Publisher doc into a PDF file (for a printer)

you will need additional software. There are some freebies out there, as
I'm sure others will respond.

be aware that a PDF that is not created correctly is not going to be
acceptable or could involve substantial rework charges.

specific issues to be aware of:

(1) fonts need to be embedded in the PDF

(2) Colorspace should be appropriate for the type of document (if using
full color, the document and the pdf should be cmyk, if using Pantone
spot colors, that is how the document needs to be set up and the pdf
created)

(3) image resolution should be appropriate to the size of the image

(4) there are many settings in a PDG generator that can ruin the job.
You need to talk with the printer to get their specific settings and
then figure out how to translate those (which will pertain to Acrobat
Distiller) to the generator you will bne using (presumably not Distiller)

(5) page geometry: bleed or not bleed, crop marks or not crop marks,
papere size, etc. The choices here will depend on what the printer is
planning to do regarding imposition, etc.

(6) Be aware that some smaller shops tend to import PDF into other
applicatins for printing. Sometimes (most of the time?) this works OK.
Sometimes it is a pure disaster....do not let them blame you or
publisher for their lack of knowledge! Check the job very carefully.
