Getting a good pdf file to my printer

Getting successful files of my Publisher newspaper to the printer has been a
huge nightmare.  I've used two different pdf creator freewares.  We've had
lots of  problems from missing fonts to numbers subbed with symbols.  We're
b&w, so shouldn't this be easy? My printer always blames Publisher, but it
seems like it should be their problem since the file looks perfect when it
leaves here.

If I purchase Adobe Distiller does anyone think these problems will be
resolved?
I've read about saving as .eps.  Should my printer have offered this as a
solution?
Am I getting the runaround -- should I dump this vendor?

It sounds like a font issue, which your printer should have recognized. Are
you using "fancy fonts"?

I'm using all kinds of fonts since I create each different ad in the paper
also.

If you are using all sorts of fonts, then this is the problem. I don't know how the
free PDF writers work, look to see if you can embed your fonts. Some fonts cannot be
embedded due to license restrictions.
If you must have unusual fonts, select all on your page, save as a picture, turn the
picture into a PDF.

You need to make sure your printer has those fonts. When I use a "fancy
font" (I know, weird term but you knew what I meant), I take a look to see
which fonts can be embedded and which I need to include with my .pub file
for my printer. If you're printer is worth your business (1) he should have
suggested this already and (2) he should know what to do with those fonts.

If he doesn't, I can recommend one in southeast PA who does wonderful work
at great rates.

Thanks a lot -- your comments were so helpful.  Please forward me the
printer's name and your contact if you think they'd do 6,000, b&w, 16pg
papers.

The first file I sent was missing fonts -- my printer guy did identify it as
a font issue.  I then changed my pdf freeware and that solved the problem at
the time. They never said the file was "missing fonts" again, but had a huge
list of other reasons why he couldn't use my file.

Again, thank you!
Pam

I KNOW they can do the job. Check out www.nefra.com. The site itself isn't
much but they have their Business Solutions guide there with their contact
information.

Any chance you remember what some of the other reasons were?

this past issue, they said on 4/16 pages, numbers (ie business phone #s) were
subbed with symbols.  Upon their suggestion, I created the pdf as greyscale
instead of rgb.  This result was even worse they said - same substitution
problems on more pages.

I find it highly unlikely that the color mode of the PDF would have any
effect on font problems. Substitution of symbols for numbers is usually
caused by a font not being properly embedded in the PDF file. And if the
printer has the proper software for handling PDFs they should be able to
determine if all the fonts in the PDF are embedded or not.  You might need
to find a printer who is a little more up to speed on handling
PDF files or find one who can accept properly packaged native Publisher
files.

You should be using Serif PagePlus11 if you are creating a small town
newspaper.
Has PDF and everything else you need all built in to the program.
