"Add to Favorite" Icon

Chris - 23 Dec 2004 20:59 GMT When you add a site to your favorites menu, some sites have a little icon from the company rather than the IE logo. Is this possible from Publisher 2003 or by inserting an HTML tag? If so, what is the tag, do you need to size the image, where do you save the image, etc.
Thanks,
Chris - 23 Dec 2004 21:17 GMT I guess I can answer my own question now... http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/Author/dhtml/howto/S hortcutIcon.asp

I tried it but that didn't seem to work (at least in simulation).
In Publisher you cannot insert the piece of HTML code they list because it includes HEAD.
Thanks,

If you look at the address bar after testing the site on your computer, don't you see a reference to where the file is on your hard drive? I don't think that could be added as a favorite.
If you have and use a ftp application, and don't want to repost your entire site, then just upload the 'favicon.ico', and test it that way. Post back and let us know if that worked...sounds like an interesting idea that I would like to try.

"Simulation" = Viewing the HTM files from disc in your browser rather than preview mode in publisher. You can actually add to your favorites from this "Simulation" mode and it will ref. the page on your PC rather than a site on the web.

I didn't know that you could add to your favorites that way, but then there is a lot I don't know. ;-)
Have you tried posting just the 'favicon.ico' on your site?

I say this because in the past when I have added a favorite with its own icon, it always has eventually been converted to the IE icon. Do any of the links in your Favorites still show their branded icon?

If you empty the internet cache you blow away any favicons. Also the amount of space you allow for the cache in the settings is a factor. If you have it set at 1600mb then you'll see favicons for a long time, set it down to 2mb and you'll lose favicons after a few days.

You can't include the icon as a part of the Publisher web, you have to upload the icon file yourself directly to the domain root.
You can test to see if you uploaded your icon in the correct location by simply browsing to it directly as in - http://www.publishermvps.com/favicon.ico
But just because you upload it doesn't mean that you see it immediately. You would need to delete any favorite to the url you have now, delete your history and empty your cache. Open a new browser window and browse to the page and then add it fresh to your favorites.

The website is www.chrissmithtest.com and when you go to the file location www.chrissmithtest.com/favicon.ico it is there, but the favicon won't store in IE.

It has to be a correct ico file for IE to load it. Refer to http://www.favicon.com/#1-13 . I suggest you use that site for your favicon reference since it's really OT here.
