I am trying to divide a tyext box into columns. As directed by Help, I
clicked on the box, then went to the Format menu, chose text box and then
text box again. There is supposed to be a "column" tab, but there is none
there. What's the deal?

Since you are in the web forum I'm assuming you are working with a web
publication versus a print publication. The former does not support columns.
Designing a web page is not the same as designing print material. Web pages
aren't intended to be in a newspaper style format. Web page content should
be the width of the page for easier reading (online reading is not the same
as print reading) or placed in as few tables as possible, for example
