Editing Publisher created website with another program

I recently created a site in Publisher using templates in Publisher. I had
done some basic html before this and a ton of desktop publising work.

When I looked at the code publisher generated I could not beleive how LONG
it was. It went on for pages and pages. And when someone else on our
project tried to open it and edit the site with Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 he
couldn't.

Is a publisher created website coded in such a way as to be incompatible
with other web design software. Is the code tweakable in any way other than
in Publisher? [By the way I was working in Publisher 2003 and the site I
built is www.catoctincreekvillage.com]

It's not completely incompatible but it can be darned difficult.

So then what are my best options? Should I recreate the site from scratch
with a more compatible program? Is this a problem inherent in Publisher or
is it the same for any wysiwyg web design software?

Words of wisdom or suggestions about what I should read to help me think
about this?

If it's your site and you've used Publisher to create it and you aren't
being forced to switch, then don't. If you are sharing a site with others
and they aren't using Publisher, then you need to get together with everyone
who will be working on the site and make a decision what you're going to do.

Publisher was not designed for website design. It is a desktop publishing
program that can also be used to create a simple site. It does not create
pure HTML, as you've seen. Personally, I use FrontPage for my sites. I'm a
big believer in using the proper tool. But that's merely *my* opinion.
Others can, and will, disagree - and that's fine with me. :-)
