I appreciate that large files are created by Pub2003 due
to its use of MXL - and that it creates and uploads
multiple images to provide a visitor with what HIS browser
can best "see". My question is: Must each visitor download
EVERYTHING Pub2003 has uploaded to the server, or does he
just download only the portion(s)that are best suited his
browser?

I would assume it's everything, only way to know for sure is to test it.
Setup a few pc's with different browsers and test your site.
