MS Office Forum / Publisher / Web Design / December 2005Images are disapearing
Previously I had wrote - "All the images that were being used for my web site, jewelleryonthenet.com.au, in the publisher "home page_files" folder have gone, missing, awol. The text contant of each page was still in the folder. When you opened the file, home page, the text and Nav bar and Buy Now links were there but the images were gone. Only a dotted outline box with a red cross in it was left. Picture Manager still showed the details re image titles and the page it was supposed to be on but there was no info re size etc.. I have re inserted the images and hopefully it wont happen again. McAffe hasn't pick up any virus etc.. So I'm at a loss to know what happened. Any help would be appreciated, Hope this is clearer than the mud I seemed to write before. The images in the home_page folder on my PC are disappearing. This time I have caught it when about 3/4s of the images had gone. The web site is OK, jewelleryonthenet.com.au. Its the Publisher folder on my PC that is having the problems??? I have backed up on a flash drive and they hold there. Any help would be appreciated. I assume that I'm not alone here in having no clue what you're saying. Then or now. There are just too many huge holes in your post. This folder you speak of, did Publisher create it or you? Where is this folder? Are you speaking of a folder on the web server or on your local PC? These images you speak of, are they Publisher generated images or are they your original images? Did you put the images in the folder or did Publisher? Text content is in the folder. Huh? You mean the folder contains only the htm files? Publisher generates htm files which would have "content" (coded in the html), it also generates image files, so you have both image files and htm files. I can only assume you are referring to opening the file "index.htm"? Are you speaking of opening it locally in your browser or our you speaking of opening it and viewing it on the web site online? Picture Manager was introduced in version 2003 of Office so I guess I can assume you are using Pub 2003. But what does this statement have to do with Publisher? It is used to manage image files in the My Pictures folder and is a simple picture editor. Are you saying that the original images are intact in your My Pictures folder and you can view them in Picture Manager? Thanks Guys and Gals" There are viruses that are intended to go thru the infected host hard drive and delete all image files. I however have no clue if you are saying that image files on your local pc are gone. FWIW, I've been here about 5 years and I think this is the deepest vaguest mud I've seen yet. Ok, so what is this folder? What does it have to do with Publisher (version?) ? Are saving a Publisher web publication locally first and then copying it to the server? If so why? Publisher generates htm files which would have "content" (coded in the html), it also generates image files, so you have both image files and htm files. If so why? Publishing directions are available at http://www.publishermvps.com/WebDesign/Version2003/tabid/33/Default.aspx The directions explain using Publisher to publish directly to the server. There is no reason to maintain local copies of the site files since the site is self-contained in the Publisher file. You only need to keep the Pub file on hand locally. The Publisher file is the only thing that should be backed up. There is no reason to backup the site files, since you can open the pub file and generate the site files at any time. (so you should have just stated "when I open my pub file the images don't display") In that event start with the obvious. Go to View, Pictures, and find out if you are toggling Hide Pictures on and off. If I go Tools, Graphics Mgr, The name of the picture is there and the location but there are no details. If I look in the pub file that holds the images, in my case on my PC, Home page_files(file folder) the images are not there - gone. All my images are jpeg. Ihave used Picture Mgr to size them first. Then when embedded on my web pages I right click and use "format picture" to go to size to unclick, lock aspect ratio. Design checker always brings this up as something I should do. I do drag the images around and size then to the postion I want them in. I then go to, Compress pictures, select, All pictures in document, web/screen, and in options check-Compress pictures & Delete cropped areas of pictures. Then I save. Publish to the web, Check the web that the site is running and the changes are on the site, close and it's time for bed. Please ehlp it is still happening and I have just found that even the backup copies are not holding the images. Checking for a problem with your video driver is the next step you should take. First right click your desktop and select Properties (or Control panel >Display). On the Display Properties screen > Settings tab > Advanced button > Troubleshoot tab. Then slide the Hardware acceleration down about three notches > OK. If this solves your problem, go to the manufacturer's web site and look around for an updated graphics driver. To find your driver version go to Advanced button as above > Adapter tab > Properties button > Driver Tab. At times only half the images are gone, also missing from the file folder, the next day more are gone and so on. I have just done a full reinstall on my hard drive and have ,once again, rebiult my site. Got it down to 2 hrs now. I,ll see if the images are still disapearing. Any one else got any suggestions. Only a dotted outline box with a red cross David - Publisher 03, On my PC it is home_page, when uploaded yes its index_files, The folder is on my desk top, I took the images and placed then in My Pictures then edited them before inserting into the Publisher web page. I then also used the Publisher funtion to resize all images for web publishing. When saved the images are in the publisher folder doubled up as is publishers way. The web site on the WWW is fine its the web publication file on my PC that appears to be the problem > hmm, that's odd. It is not that the images are even there any more to viewin that web page file. The file that holds all the content of the web pages. (The one people notice has a double set of image files created etc..) The images are GONE. How is this happening? How do I stop it happening? All I do is edit and update the web pages SAVE it and then close. The next day I open it and the images are GONE?? If I open another similar file the images are there for that file. If I reload a saved/backup version of the same web pages from a CD etc the images are still there. Only the copy on my desk top appears to be effected??
