publisher could not save the file to the web

mafixit - 20 Jan 2006 22:18 GMT I am at my wit's end.
I am trying to publish an update to my client's web site. My host is IPowerWeb, I am using Publisher 2003 and have a dsl connection. I have followed suggestions carefully, including deleting my ftp sites and re-adding them. I have tried to upload through http:// as well as ftp://.
Never had a problem publishing before, but now no matter what computer I use at any of my office locations, I get the stupid error that "publisher could not save the file to the web. Check your URL or network connection and try again".
I can create one page and upload it with no problem. My host's tech support can create a simple html page and upload it.
This file will not save. Nor will any other older versions of this web site I have on my hard drive.
Please help. Her real estate web site has been down for three days now. I have spent an entire day trying to figure this out.
DavidF - 21 Jan 2006 16:43 GMT I presume that you are starting with the original Pub document, and then producing the new HTML files by File > Publish to the Web, and then either using ftp or http to publish those files to the web host? You are not trying to modify old HTML files, right? All changes should start in the Pub file...
When you modified the Pub file the last time, did you leave any objects overlapping the work area and the scratch area? Did you run Design Checker?

I am starting with the original document - the same one I have uploaded many, many times. It's only a 6 page web site. I made one minor change to a section of text. Design checker has been run and there are absolutely no issues.
The only difference now is that I am running Publisher 2003 on a new laptop with Windows XP SP2, but I tried uploading on my old PC and still get the same error message. It uploads the first page, but will not upload the other pages and several images are missing on the home page.
I read the articles, but they have not been able to help me solve this issue.

DavidF - 22 Jan 2006 17:27 GMT Humm, not sure I have an answer. Perhaps David Bartosik will see this, and jump in to save the day.
One question, when you said in your original post that you "deleted your FTP sites", did you delete all the HTML files that had been previously loaded to your web host? If not try that.
DavidF
> David, > [quoted text clipped - 56 lines] > > I > > > > have spent an entire day trying to figure this out. mafixit - 22 Jan 2006 19:03 GMT Yup. I deleted the ftp sites and readded them, deleted all files in the public folder...
I can access the site, Publisher just won't upload properly. It doesn't make sense.
I can transfer files using ctueFTP, too, into the public folder. Unfortunately I can't load my Publisher web site using ftp because publisher has to create the site, right? Or is there a way to change my Publisher document to an .html file that is loadable using a separate ftp program.

DavidF - 22 Jan 2006 21:56 GMT Sorry, I am out of ideas about your problem, but yes, you can use FTP. When you go to publish your site from the publisher document, choose to publish it to a folder on your hard drive. Then FTP those HTML files and subfolders to your site.

The home page comes up, but the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th pages cannot be found on the web.
They all have strange numbers in the html source, like page 697 instead of linking to page 2.
They are correct in the original document.
How can I fix that?

In my navigation bar in my .pub file, the first link "home" should point to page1, or home... the seond link, "Search HUD Listings", should point to page3, etc.
Take a look at www.goldkeypros.com

when I hover my mouse over that menu item I see the link URL in the status bar is showing it linked to the file - page2.htm the html file named page2.htm doesn't mean it's the second page of the pub file, it can be any page in the document you want it to be.
Use the web options under the tools menu or off the web toolbar. There you will find custom naming for the html file. Use that properly or otherwise accept Publisher default naming conventions.
As for your publishing situation. My thought is that if you deleted the ftp location you had set up and been using, then the likely then is that when you re-did the ftp location you did it wrong somewhere. so it doesn't work.

Page 2 is page 2 in the publisher file, and I do have the pages named as they should be. I built this page two years ago and until last week, was able to upload with no real problems. I even went back and attempted to use an old version of the web page file, with the same result.

David Bartosik - 23 Jan 2006 05:03 GMT the reason you should upload using publisher versus a separate utility is because unless you know what you are doing you'll screw it up. The most common screw up, only uploading the first page.
The file names publisher uses for the html files has ZERO relevance to a pages location within the publisher web publication document.
Fix what? It's working as designed. Read all articles on page http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/articles/category/1922.aspx to get up to speed.

I tried to upload my .pub file to my pubic folder. Still getting the error message that Publisher could not save.
See www.goldkeypros.com
It appears to partially load the first page, and then hangs up. Page 2 it titled "Search HUD Listings", has a link in the navigation bar in the .pib document to Page 2 of the document, but cannot be found after uploading. The link on the first page on the web after loading says "link to Page 697" when you hover over the navigation bar.
If anyone wants to try loading this on their end, I'll be happy to pass on the file for them to try.

You said earlier in this thread that you just switched to a new laptop with Pub 2003. Did you originally produce this site with Pub 2000?
From the Web Tools toolbar, or Tools > Options > Web Tab, what do you have ticked under Saving?
Did you compress the images?

Under Web Options:
Checked: Organinze Supporting Files... Enable Incremental...
No other boxes have checkmarks.
I did not intentially compress any images.

DavidF - 23 Jan 2006 15:58 GMT If this site was produced in Pub 2000 originally, then you probably don't understand the BIG changes that were made starting in Pub 2002...and probably should not have switched. Go back and read the articles that David Bartosik referenced at: http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/articles/category/1922.aspx
Try unticking both those boxes under web options, and then try publishing your site.
You SHOULD be using the compress pictures option. From looking at your site on a dial-up connection, the images appear to be large, high resolution, and take a long time to load. This is another change from Pub 2000, that you should know about.

Unchecked both boxes, compressed graphics. Still getting same error.
I am still getting the error and it still partially loads the site.

David Bartosik [MSFT MVP] - 24 Jan 2006 03:07 GMT You didn't need to send both a 2000 file and a 2003 file. I didn't go near the 11 mb 2000 file, I stuck to the 740 kb 2003 file. I published it in seconds with no issue - http://www.goldkeypros.com
After I cleaned up the mess on the server first.
My diagnosis... a failure to follow host instructions (which can vary widely by host), as I found that your account has a folder called public_html. Very last item on my article http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/articles/80560.aspx
The host would have instructions that instruct you to publish the web site inside the public_html folder. It can't be located outside that folder.
I discovered the site had been published to that folder and outside that folder which is a conflict. I blew everything away and a clean publish to the correct location went flawlessly.

I noticed that only the 'contact' navbar link worked from the home page. From the 'contact' page, if you mouse over the navbar links again (which do work from this page), you will notice that each page is capitalized, but the links from the home page are lower case. All the links and page names should be redone, all in lower case.

I was trying a few things this morning and was still having trouble. I deleted the orginal navigation bar and created a new one. Then I made sure the web options boxes were unchecked, but checked allowing .png graphics.
The site is now working fine. I don't know if the navigation bar had some issues that were causing the problem (or one of the problems).
I did clean the files out of the server that were outside the public folder but David said he also had to do that, so I don't know what happened. Once in while I hit the publish key too soon (prior to clicking on the public folder) but always try to get those files out of there.
I understand the publishing instructions of the host and follow them, but occassionally make a mistake, when my fingers work ahead of my brain :-)
Thanks for all your help on this - I am off to change the password so the dirty little devils who infected the site with the original virus can't get in again.
