OK let's see if I can get it typed this time without a shutdown of IE.  Any
MS program I use encounters error after 2-5 mintues and shutsdown.  All
Office products, Front Page, Publisher, IE MS anti spyware.  Randomly.  I am
running Windows XP and Office XP with all updates current.  I just loaded the
new MS Defender also.  I have Norton too.  This is a new computer.

Can you tell us exactly what happens? Exactly error messages, etc.

A white box pops up and it will say: MS "word" (or whichever program I'm in)
encounterd and error and needs to close. Then it gives me the choice if I
want to report to MS or not. I have been.  I also went to control
panel>administrative tools> event viewer and I can see many items in here but
don't know what to do from here.
I have repaired office, didn't help.  Uninstalled office and installed
office. None seem to help. After I had uninstalled office and before I had
installed it again, I was in EI and got the same error again...so that was
without any office program on my computer.

This forum on Publisher web design is not really a place to get the best help
for such an issue(s).
You should be using a Windows XP support forum.
Most likely Windows XP is shutting things down due to some issue so that it
can protect the state of the OS, that's what it's designed to do.
Some common sense things to try before you seek help from Windows XP experts
would be ....
1) uninstall Norton (crap imo and others) and see if that helps.
2) use system restore. restore to a previous time when you thing the pc ran
fine.

And so, why do you think you will get different advice by posting again to
the Publisher newsgroup? As David suggested, post to the Windows XP group.

It's pretty simple...you're in the wrong newsgroup to get much help with
your problem. THIS newsgroup is dedicated to MS Publisher.

You obviously cannot follow simple directions, so yes...you should go out
and buy a Mac right away...it will solve all your problems.

For future questions, use the Google Groups interface if you aren't going to
set them up for a newsreader in Outlook Express. I don't like the MS
interface either. It takes **forever** to do anything, even with broadband.

Well, maybe you're cross-posting. But the header shows you are posting to
microsoft.public.PUBLISHER.webdesign.

No, matter. IF you post to the correct newsgroup you will undoubtedly get
help. There are LOTS of people that will help you for FREE...just discribe
the problem accurately and you'll be fine....or buy a Mac if that's what
toots your horn. Hint: ALL computers and programs have problems...including
Macs. My best friend's Mac is on it's 3rd hardrive in one year. My brother's
3 year old Mac just fried it's motherboard...go figure!

Another hint: Norton/Symantec sucks.

I used to be a big Norton fan - and then they starting discontinuing AV
updates for software that wasn't very old and the price for those updates
skyrocketed from $5 a year to $20.

I use AVG and recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Norton has gotten really awful in the past 4 years...imo.

I'm still making up my mind on av stuff..I have AVG, Avast, McAfee, and
EZTrust running on 4 separate machines. So far I like Avast the best except
the free version doesnt allow of scheduled scans,...trying to get Task
Schedule to make Avast run with more than a standard scan (or buy the real
version). I can every night...paranoid strikes deep. EZTrust is good but too
EZ..too simple - but seems to work fine.

Rob,

There was a new review and evaluation of most of the AV packages in this
month's PCWorld magazine, which you might find interesting. Like JoAnn, I
use AVG for AV, but zone alarm for my firewall. I too dislike Norton...way
too invasive.

Thanks I'll try to snag that article.
I used to use Zone Alarm on the wife's  machine and Sygate on mine...they
were fine. But when I built the new XP machines I decided to just go with
the XP built in and have had no problems yet. Also use CrapCleaner and
AdAware and have been very happy with the entire set up except I haven't
decide on which AV to stay with. The free one year on this machine EZtrust
runs out in august so I still have some time to decide.

Hey, chill. You got the reaction you did because you posted back into the
same newsgroup that told you to post in the XP newsgroup. As your problems
also deal with IE, not just Office, that is why you were sent there.

But before you go, change your attitude if you want help. There are a lot of
really helpful people in these newsgroups, but rather than ranting, just lay
out all the facts associated with your issues, and store the attitude...you
will get more help. And give them specifics if you post. What software are
you running, which versions, what are the error messages, what specifically
happens and when. What have you tried already, and what were the results.
Don't make people try to read your mind. Do that, in the proper newsgroup,
with a little respect, and you are likely to find your answers.
