The smaller picture will load more quickly. If the image is being
"imported", such as a banner image used on each page, then once it is loaded
in the viewer's browser, it will load more quickly on the next page viewed.

I guess it depends on what you mean by linked.

Best thing to do is to test it yourself by trying both, and timing the
loading time.
