MS Office Forum / Publisher / Web Design / October 2006Publisher - Display formatting changes from publisher to web previ
I have been creating our corp web site in publisher 2003. However I am now at 12 pages and am finding that what is viewed in the publishing format, is changing when viewed in the web preview setting or when saved to Single Page Web or any other format. All this even on the same computer (laptop IBM T30 set at 92DPI) not to mention on my home tower or my colleagues wide screen laptops. Lines of text are disappearing, as text is enlarging and therfore shifting paragraphs. Using Web Font Georgia the text is shifting longer and larger, Using Webfont Times New Roman, the text shifts smaller and narrower and leves large spaces. I really do not want to publish this to the world to view until I can get this sorted out. If I create and view this on my Laptop and then do the same on my home PC, the issues are the same. What do I do? Publisher HTML output is at 96 dpi. Change your screen resolution to 96 dpi, especially for the computer that is going produce the HTML output from Publisher. This is a problem peculiar to the wide screen and varying aspect ratio screens of some laptops. Besides the dpi, check the screen resolution and see if you can set it to a more standard resolution such as 1152 X 864. If not, then go to a computer that is using a standard screen resolution, and produce your Publisher HTML output from that computer. This is what I had to do....and the site then viewed ok on the laptop. Another poster had another solution to this, and if I can find it, I will post it. Perhaps it is a problem with your design. Open one of the templates, and preview it. Do you still get the same problems? If not, then the problem is with your design. If you have a problem with previewing the template, then check IE. In IE, go to View, Text and make sure you are viewing the text in medium size? Still get the same problem? Right click your desktop, properties and under the Appearance tab, are you using normal font size? Under the Settings tab, what is the Screen Resolution? Under Advanced, what is the DPI setting? If you have no problem with previewing a template, open your Pub file run the Design Checker under Tools and see if that helps identify any problem. Are you using a master page? That can result in mixed results and should be reserved for print documents. It could also be another design problem. Publisher does not support word wrap around images in HTML. Also a possibility...how are you formatting the text boxes? Publisher can have problems converting some formatting to HTML, such as indents, bullets, columns, and such. Try inserting a new text box at the bottom of your page without any paragraph formatting, fill, borders, etc and using only the default font...make sure nothing overlaps that box, and see if that text box previews correctly. If it does, go back and strip off all the formatting of a problem text box, and test. Then add back design elements, formatting etc one at a time until you identify the problem. If you can, upload the site at least temporarily, post the URL of the site and identify the specific problem(s) you have on that page(s), and perhaps we can spot something else. Another poster reminded me of another issue that might affect how your text boxes display. When Publisher converts your text to HTML, it doesn't know what to do with font sizes such as 7.1, 8.5 etc, and will round off those numbers. Make sure you are using even font sizes.
