Go to a web site that offers free counters and get their
code. Then go to http://counterbot.com/cutpaste.html You
will find the instuctions at the very bottom of the page.
And they work too.

You might try www.bravenet.com They offer a lot of free goodies to ad to a
web site without having to run a cgi script.
Cgi scripts are better, but this will work.
