HTML code fragments, specifically "Pay Now" paypal buttons, are drifting up
on website. Mine looks fine, but on other computers the buttons are up too
high. I need to upgrade my web design software, but right now I want to see
if I can get this to work. If you want to look at the website go to
www.coastlaw.com The issue is on the registration pages. The other issue is
on the "about the speaker" page some computers look like I have too many
lines between paragraphs.  Am I just trying to do too much with Publisher?
Thanks.

I am not saying you might not do better with other software, but I don't
know if you will find any software that will produce html code that will
look the same in every browser on every computer every time. There are
simply too many variables, and some are beyond your control. Expert web
builders are constantly challenged with building sites that approach this
goal, but few if any get there.

It took me a long time to spot what you seem to be talking about, which
suggests to me that it probably is not an issue for the majority of people.
However, you can tweak things.

When you use html code fragment boxes, sometimes you just need to resize the
box to "just fit". You might capture one of the paypay buttons, and
temporarily insert it into your Pub page, go to format > Picture > Size tab
and make sure it is Scaled at 100%. Then take your code fragment box and
using the "snap to" function, resize the box until it is exactly the same
size as the paypal button your are importing into your page. If your code
fragment boxes are slightly different sizes, that alone will result in the
image loading in unpredictable ways. Try it. Make your code fragment box
very large and do a web page preview. Where does the button image load?

Also, the Nudge tool can be a good thing. Or in Pub 2003, your arrow keys
will also nudge an object. Go to your button code fragment boxes and nudge
them slightly, do a web page preview, and see if they line up correctly
then. What shows on your Pub page may be different than what shows when you
do the web page preview...go with the web page preview. You should be able
to tweak the placement such that it will look fine.

As to spaces being more some places than others, that is a little harder to
tweak sometimes. Sometimes it is because you have used formatting in the
text box that doesn't convert to html. Avoid paragraph formatting other than
font face and size. And, even with the font, use web friendly fonts at even
sizes. A 11 point Arial font will be converted to a 10 point font when it is
converted to html, which will result in the text taking up less space than
on your Pub page.

On your registration page I can't tell if you are overlapping one text box
with lines, or using separate text boxes. If you are using separate text
boxes, perhaps make sure they are exactly the same size. Once again use the
snap to function to resize the text boxes. Just move the box next to another
one, and move the sides until they snap to the other.

Or once again, use the nudge or the arrow keys to move the lines up or down,
doing web page previews until the spaces seem correct. Even then if someone
has their monitor set differently than yours, there can be variances.

I guess what I am trying to say is that you just have to play with things.
Nudge things around. Check formatting and such and you usually can get
things to work pretty well. And I suspect the same is true with most
software. And finally, don't sweat the small stuff. There is no such thing
as perfection...it is only a goal.

Just my two cents worth...

Thanks DavidF - all your suggestions will help. At some point I will break
down and hire someone! Until then, I appreciate any and all words of wisdom
(which you had many). K

Then don't spend too much time on this design, because it will have to be
totally redone. Publisher's code is not convertible.
