Does anyone know how to easily add a movie clip, .wmv to Publisher 2007.  I
do it using insert object but it only works in design and not in the preview
browser.  I have searched MS till I'm blue in the face and find nothing.  I'm
not familiar with html code writing so it's got to be something basic.  Also,
anyone try to add PayPal buttons to their site using Publisher?
Thanks in advance.

As per PayPal...you would use the insert html code fragment tool to insert
the code from PayPal.

Dave, thanks for the info.  I've only just started to learn how to build
websites and designs.  I'm looking for the easy out, first stab was Yahoo
sitebuilder but wanted something more professional looking.  Looks like to do
what I want easily I'll have to purchase MS Sharepoint 2007 which from
understanding is the replacement for Frontpage.  Thanks again.

Sharepoint is not the replacement for FP, Expression Web is and unless you
need Sharepoint for some other reason you should use EW.

head is spinning.  You are right, Expression Web is what I would want.

Rob, you sound like you are familar with Expression Web.  Do you think or
know if I can import my web design from Publisher into Expression Web and
then add functionality of video, sound clips of songs and Pay Pay buttons?

Thanks in advance

Welp...I know you can open Publisher webs with EW...but believe me you don't
want to spend time trying to fix Pub's code...just start over again in EW.

Actually, spent some time looking at Dreamweaver and it looks like it would
be even easier for the somewhat beginner to use.  Also, finally located info
on MS Pub help where it tells you it uses HTML and 2 other codes and using an
editor is not a good idea and not recommended.  Thanks for your time.

DW is a great program and imo has a steeper learning curve than EW has...and
it's a LOT more money than EW is. I have them both. They both have trial

Oh, it'll be a riot all right.  Unfortunately I had built the website
already, so I really don't want to lose what I've already done.  Plus the
templete background is exactly what I wanted in Publisher and would really
like to either import if possible.  I checked pricing between the 2 pkgs and
DW lists @ 339 while EW lists at 299 so 30 bucks is not an issue unless I've
got wrong pricing.  Thanks again and I'll write back to let all know what the
experience was.

By the way Rob...going back to the original questions here...will Donna be
able to easily embed a video player in a EW site? And, won't she also
"insert" PayPal code into EW too?

I am not suggesting that she shouldn't move to EW, but are these tasks
automagically done in EW? Could you discuss how one would embed a video
player in EW, and how one would integrate PayPal? Thanks.

Paypal no problem, just copy/paste Paypal generated code wherever you want.

I gotta run, more on inserting video later.

Dave and Rob,
I admit I am truly a beginninger with this stuff.  I'm not a computer
illiterate and do learn extremely quickly though.  Here's what I have found
so far.  I published to my local drive the website I designed in Publisher
2007.  I tried to open in EW and I couldn't get the entire files even though
I followed all the directions.  Then I tried to open in DW.  Wow, it opened
with all the files.  I admit that there are some problems on visual design
view, but the majority did come in.  Template I was using, colors, fonts,
jpegs and all my text.  Problems are with the forms I used in Publisher (I'll
have to redo) and I had removed all my links.  Basically I will have to now
redo a form for request/coments that I use, hyperlinks, insert video and go
to PayPal to get their line of HTML for link and buttons, shopping cart.

If this is any indication so far, I'll be going with DW even if it costs
more.  Microsoft sometimes doesn't create the most user friendly software.
Also, I personally feel their help is not the best.  I called a few days ago
and I do have free support for 90 days, and was told to contact my computer
mfg.  I did, they told my its my problem to figure things out not Microsofts
or theirs.  (Of course there's a problem there too!)

I really appreciate everyone's guidance.  I just want to get this website
republished so that it looks and feels professional and I can't do that with
freebie software.  Too limited and the existing site looks it!

Where is your website anyway...can you post the URL?

You can open Pub webs with EW or DW...the problem is the code that Pub
creates is nasty proprietary stuff...you will have LOTS of problems with
either DW or EW or ANY web editor if you try to salvage it...trust me you
are FAR better off redoing the website in either DW, EW or any web editor
you ultimately choose.

Really.

I assume that there is code that links/imports a video player on the host,
and that you have to insert that code. The same would be true in
Publisher...same for PayPal. Just saying...

I guess the point I am trying to make is that regardless of whether you use
Publisher, Web Expression, or some other program you still have to figure
out the code to insert into the page that allows you to embed a video
player....and the same is true of inserting the code for PayPal. Just as
Publisher does not have this built-in, neither does Web Expression. In both
cases the challenge is figuring out the code to be inserted.

I have seen Publisher sites with embedded video players. Here is an example
of an e-commerce site built with Publisher:
http://www.electronicsstations.com/  It seems to me that one does not have
to move to a different program than Publisher...one just has to figure out
the PayPal code...or the video player code.

And of course this is not getting into the debate about code bloat in
Publisher...

Actually, I hear the new version of WebPlus will allow automatic
insertions of YouTube videos. It already does PayPal code. In the forum,
a member posted that Serif said it will be released in a couple of weeks.

Yeah...that is why we got the screaming deal offer for WP 10 for only 19.95.
I figured that the new version was coming out shortly and got an email this

Rob,
Can I salvage the background files to start again?  You're the second person
that has told me this.

The website I presently have is a sitebuilder freebie pkg job.  You know, do
what you can 'with what you have to work with' and I'm embarassed with it.
It had to be done very quickly before my husband's performance in Washington
and to give a website to the Vietnam Veteran's of America, and the Vietnam
Veterans Assistance Fund for them to post.  But here it is
www.dannybsound.com

I have found the perfect background elements I'd like to use.  Typing and
redoing the other stuff is about 2 days of work for me at most.  So I guess
I'll start from scratch.

Thanks much, you folks are very helpful.

Dave,
Not that site's stuff.  Sorry for the confusion.  I redesigned a new website
to replace the one you are looking at.  When I redesigned it I did it in
Publisher.  I like the looks and feel of the new one, presently unpublished
to the web, and am wondering since I published the Publisher 2007 web design
to my hard drive would I be able to use the different files to somewhat start
from scratch this new design in DW.  Everyone says start from scratch, but I
like the background of the unpublished to web design and would like to use it
when I re-create the new site in DW.  BTW the DW help videos are great for me!

Sorry I was unclear.  I just would like to use as much as possible without
having to start from ground zero.  Some of the Publisher 2007 looks identical
to what it did in Publisher 2007, other parts are totally goofed up and need
to be deleted.

TIA

You can try copy and pasting different design elements from your Publisher
file to what ever you choose to use to build your site. You can use the
graphics and images produced in the Publisher html files. You can copy the
text. But, you really shouldn't try to recycle the html code that Publisher
uses. It will just create problems for you in the future if not immediately.

Bottom line is that now that you have designed a new web site and like the
design, it shouldn't take that long to recreate it in DW or EW once you
learn how to use those programs. I would also suggest that if you are
bothered by the amount of time it will take to recreate your site, then you
are in for a rude awakening. The learning curve for EW and especially DW is
huge compared to Publisher. Don't forget, the whole reason for switching is
to get a better product and to learn to use software that won't limit you in
the future. You gotta be willing to invest some time and recreating your Pub
web design will be only a tiny part of the process. Just jump in there and
do it ;-) That is my 2 cents...

Thanks Dave.  You are right, I do need to spend the time.  Question, if I
paste from Publisher, from what I've seen in both DW and EW is that it also
copies the html code for that image.  So I guess what you mean is that if I
copy or paste anything it must be a 'clean' image so that I can create the
coding, right?

Yes, maybe...I would copy from the Publisher file, not the html files if
possible. Images...I would go back to your originals that you have on your
hard drive, but you might be able to copy some of the other design elements
directly from the Pub file.

And don't get me wrong...I don't mean to be condescending or insulting. Web
building is simply a lot more difficult than most people realize. Regardless
of what program you use, you need to learn about optimizing images for the
web. You need to learn how the web media is different than print media...it
is a different mind set and there are some things that you can do in print
media that you can't do in web media...it won't translate to html regardless
of the program you use to build your site. You have to learn about html
code...about uploading procedures, etc., etc. What I was trying to say is
that if one is going to produce and manage their own website, there are lots
of things to learn. And that can be a fun process...good luck.

You can use all your images from existing website - just don't use WordArt,
Autoshapes, etc...you'd have to convert them to .jpg or .gifs first. DON'T
copy any code at all from Publisher to DW or EW or whatever.

Okay guys, I wimped out.  Have a buddy who does website building and he is
going to get me started with my standard page which will be the basics for
all my new pages.  He also supplied me with a website that has free tutorials
for learning how to use DW.  I got 27 days left so I better learn it so I can
make my decision, which more than likely will be to purchase DW.

Thanks again for all your good input!
