Tip: Visitors to your site don't care about a hit counter, if anything it shows how few people have visited. That's not to say that designers should not be concerned about how many show up in a month, but there are far better ways to get this info. Almost all web hosts maintain log files for each site. Download those and get a program such as LogAnalyzer Lite or DeepLog Analyzer - both are free, that will give you not only the number of visitors but the pages they visited, the pages they left from, how many unique vs. returning visitors you've had, Search phrases, referring Search engines and a lot more.
