Publishing to web

jake - 10 Mar 2008 19:11 GMT I've finished creating a web site in publisher and am having problems publishing it to my hosting site. When I click on "publish to web" under the file menu, it brings up the box asking where to save. According to Publisher help, I typed in the domain URL in the file name box, but receive an error when it tries to do this. Do I have to use FTP or is there an easier way? Also, do I have to send graphics, ie pictures seperately?
sally - 10 Mar 2008 21:27 GMT Jake, my host (according to their "help" page) required me to create a new folder called INDEX and to "publish to the web" with file name "index" and save as type "Web Page, Filtered". Then I needed to go to the web and type in the ftp for the host, and copy the index.htm and index_files to the FTP site window. I hope this makes sense - I have just finished my first website and I'm still trying to get my SUBMIT button to work. lol.

Where I wrote "copy to the FTP site window" I forgot there are three folders in this window - copy into the "html" folder!

DavidF - 10 Mar 2008 23:39 GMT You didn't say what version of Publisher you are using, or which operating system or which version of which browser...all affect uploading procedures. So start with:
If you are using a form in your site, then reference: How to publish a Publisher web in HTTP: http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/pages/80557.aspx
reference: Publisher web publication forms 101: http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/archive/2006/01/07/80564.aspx
Reference: Prepare, publish, and maintain your Publisher Web site: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA100947601033.aspx It is written for Pub 2007, but if you are using IE7 instead of IE6, then the directions for using Vista also would apply to Pub 2003. FTP and HTTP uploading has changed with the introduction of IE7 and Vista.
If you choose to use FTP uploading then consider downloading and installing the free FTP client FileZilla: http://filezilla-project.org/ It is likely to be easier for you. Take the time to also download the excellent documentation and read it.

I'm using Publisher 2007, (which I really like as far as the desinging) but it is much more difficult to publish to web. I've used Filezilla to transfer FTP and it is successful, sort of. The file transfers and I can see it in my file via my control panel on the site. However, am I supposed to FTP them to index folder or public ftp or ? Also, I see just one pub. file, not all the individual pages on the site. When I try to view the site online, the home pages loads (with image problems) but none of the other pages are available. Please help!

DavidF - 11 Mar 2008 19:18 GMT When you "Publish to the Web" Publisher will produce an "index.htm" file (your home page) and an "index_files" folder which contains all your other pages and your supporting graphics and images. Given that you can see your index.htm file without images, and no other pages, it sounds like you didn't upload the "index_files" folder. You will upload it to the same directory...right alongside your index.htm file.

This is my first atempt to publish a site using Publisher 2007. When I open my publisher file and click; File - Publish to Web - then follow the Publisher Help instructions, which tell me to type my URL in the File Name box, and click save, I now get an error message say the file could not be found, file has been deleted or moved. Anyway, I've also tried sending FTP, but I now think I was transferring .pub files. Please tell me what kind of file to send/transfer and to what folder, i.e. index or public or ?? Any help is appreciated.

DavidF - 13 Mar 2008 17:52 GMT What is unclear about my reply? I told you what to upload...the index.htm file and the index_files folder, and since you already have the index.htm file uploaded, all you have to upload now is the index_files folder. And if it still isn't clear then go back and again read the material I linked. Forget about HTTP uploading unless you are using a form. Use FileZilla.

As I said, I am new to publisher and to creating web sites. I've finally got the files transferred with FileZilla via FTP and transferred to the public_html file at the host. Site seems to be working, althought there a few bug which I still have to work on. One more question, if you don't mind. What is the best way to insert a photo album or group of photos to a page?

It can take a while to wrap your head around uploading, and now that MSFT has complicated things with Vista and IE7, I think you will find that the time you invest in learning how to use FileZilla will save you time and frustration in the future. Glad to hear that you got the site uploaded.
One correction. Not to be picky, but you uploaded your index.htm file and your index_files folder to your public_html FOLDER, not file. I point this out, for others who may be reading this, and because of your other question about photos.
There are a number of ways to insert photos and/or photo albums into a Pub web. Which is best, depends on what you want to accomplish. The most common approach usually is how to do thumbnails to full size images. This can be accomplished by inserting a thumbnail size image (perhaps 100 to 150 pixels wide), and then linking that image to a large size image that is actually inserted into another page of your Pub web publication, along with back and forward links. Alternatively, you can link that thumbnail to a full size image that you upload to another subfolder on your host...thus my correction about the use of the words "file" and "folder". For example you could create a subfolder on your site using FileZilla alongside the index_files folder, within the public_html folder, called "images". Then your link from your thumbnail to the full size image that you upload to the "images" folder would be: http://www.yoursite.com/images/yourimage.jpg
Reference: How to Thumbnail in Publisher Web Publications : http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/pages/80553.aspx and: Reduce download times by adding thumbnail images to a Web page: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HP102038031033.aspx
Alternatively, most third party image editors have the capacity to create a html "slide show", which you can upload with FileZilla to a subfolder on your host, and link to from your site. Also JAlbum and Porta are popular photo album programs that are free to use (just Google for the sites). If you get real invested in this, you can also create an iframe to "import" your html slide show into a page of your website, but this is probably beyond what you are asking at this point.
One thing to keep in mind, the more images in your web, the longer it takes to load. Be sure to either optimize and size your images before you insert them into a Pub web page, or compress them before you upload them. Pub 2007 has this tool built-in.
