I have created a few websites using Mal's E - a free shopping cart.  I had
never done it before and have very minimal web design experience.  I found it
very easy to use.  It integrates with a number of payment processors as well
- including PayPal.  Check out their site at www.mals-e.com.

I use Mal's also and like it. However, many people may find it is not
necessary if they are using PayPal. Mal charges $7/mo. for the gateway.

You're right, PayPal may be enough depending on how much flexibility is
needed.  I always try to use PayPal alone first if possible and then move up
if I need to.  I haven't yet needed to upgrade to the additional features
that Mal's offers when you pay.
