I have found that if you are downloading a gif using either xp or win2k with any type of personal firewall that gif's loose there animation. I haven't had such an issue in over 2 years of running WinXP Pro and ZoneAlarm firewall. But if your firewall is stripping the data from files I'd bet you're using Norton.
