I created a web page from Publisher 2003. I used one of
the templates in program, but the pages are 4608px long.
I went to the master page and shortened the page using
the custom setting, but it totally distored my background
image (it turned it gray). How to I shorten these pages,
in print preview, they are 5-6 sheets long. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

As of version 2003 you DO NOT concern yourself with page length in a web
publication. In previous version you set a page length under page setup.
With this version the length of the page will be written by Publisher, when
you have Publisher generate the actual web page (publish as web), to match
the content objects you inserted on the page.

Master pages are for print publications. I strongly recommend against it's
use in a web publication.

Background for a web publication should be handled under Format, background.

A web publication SHOULD NOT be previewed in print preview. Use web preview.
