When should you backspace, and when should you delete when you are typing a
paper?

This can't be the answer you are looking for.

You would backspace when you want to remove the entries before the cursor
and you would delete when you want to remove entries after the cursor.

But harken! there are two other methods of removing text; the "go back"
curved arrow on the toolbar and "grouping all the text with the mouse and
delete or cut.
