What version Publisher? If you are using 2003-07 you could do this manually if
you are using the catalogue merge. After the merge, in step five, create a new
publication. Arrange the entries the way you are describing.

thanks mary. i'm using 2003. the problem is that my merged information
includes photos etc. so i can't easily just move things to the next page. i
don't want any "b's" on the same pages with "a's" and so on. i need a fresh
section for each letter of the alphabet. is there some way to connect the
pages of the booklet like you can connect text boxes so that it flows?

The catalog merge works with pictures. There is a catalog merge block, you put
all the information fields in the block. These will all stay together after you
merge and you create a new publication at step five. It is then only a matter of
pulling all the b's to the scratch area, inserting a new page, and dragging them
back and so forth. It is time consuming but this is the only way I know.
