creating a newsletter, deleted all extra content, deleted
all pics (as werent depixalized when initially added and
are HUGE) and the publisher file is STILL 65 meg!  what
does publisher do to text and pics to create such an
unmanageable file...and, how can i make the file smaller?

thanks

Which version of Publisher are you using?

Do you want the file size smaller so you can send it via email or post it on
a web? If so, consider turing it into a .pdf.

want it smaller so i can edit it - and then publish.
needs to stay in publisher format - using 2002.  I am
working with a file that is 65 meg and no idea how it got
so big.  Another person took an existing publisher file
and edited it - adding a lot of large pics - i removed
all the images and deleted the extra content...still too
big to manage...and only 8 pages.  SOmehting does not
make sense

This will help a little,

That doesn't make sense. My last 12 page newsletter was 500 kb
(including at least 4 jpgs). Try copying the articles and pasting them
into a new document.

Another thing you might try is pasting them into notepad to strip out
all the extra formatting, and then paste them into a new document in
publisher.

Has anyone got a url that describes this being fixed in Publisher 2003
before I consider buying it, or even better something that describes a fix
in Publisher 2002?

I've got the same problem in Publisher 2002 (SP3 and Windows XP SP2). It
isn't the problem described in KB 279368 as the document is neither a
catalog, a web page, nor a newsletter and there's no extra content. I've got
a 4 page document that grows to 170MB as graphics are inserted. If I delete
the content from all four pages it goes down to 100MB. If I delete three of
the four pages it stays at 100MB.

Clever stuff!

I've been working on a newsletter with Pub 2003 and the problem is still
there.  I replaced a high resoution picture a few times and the filesize has
grown from a few megabytes to over 80 megabytes. It is very unweidy to work
with as saves take a long time. I'm hoping there is a fix or procedure that
can reduce the filesize back to normal.

If you are planning to email your newsletter out consider converting it to a
pdf file.

The best pdf converting program for making the smallest file size is
PDF-XChange. It comes in a "lite" version which goes for about $20.

It comes in three versions, "Lite", "Standard" and "Pro".

If interested, you can get a trial version at:

http://www.docu-track.com/

There are also free pdf programs, i.e., Primopdf and pdf995 but I have no
experience with them except they can't match the file size of PDF-XChange.
(Neither can Adobe Acrobat).

LarryD,

Though the problem with storing JPG files in a uncompressed format in the
Pub file was addressed in Publisher 2003, perhaps this article about storing
Extra Content in the Design Gallery in Publisher 2000 will help:

I cannot replicate your problem using Publisher 2003. Can you supply us with
the troublesome file?

Sure can. Let me know where to upload it (I guess I should probably zip it,
if it will compress ok).

thanks.
