I would like to find out why Publisher 2000 can't work
with Publisher 97. Each time we send a publisher file to
the Printers, they have to re-format the document. I would
like to know if Publisher is backwards compatible?

How can you design a product to work with the next one that hasn't been
developed yet?
It'll be easier for you to save your files as a Pub97 file. (You might also
want to consider a printer who uses up to date software as well.)

The problem with resting on your laurels is that eventually you are sitting
on dead branches.

Easier said than done...
I have already saved the file as a Publisher 97 file. It
still has to be re-formatted in Publisher 97.
Oh, the Printers are too stubborn to upgrade their
software. So we have to sort out their problem.

After managing to set up OE-QuoteFix on his new PC, Ed reads a message

Or convert to PDF, or find another printer, or refer your printer to the
fact that if they are in the US or Canada they are eligible for a free copy
of Publisher 2003 when it comes out.

It's impossible to save a Publisher 98, 2000, 2002 or
2003 file as a Publisher 97 file. Backwards compatibility
started with Publisher 2000.

Publisher 2000 can only save as Publisher 98, not 97.

Marc because Publisher was the most advanced version of Publisher till
Publisher 2003 with added extras.
Publisher 97 was not printer independent and consequently when you send the
file to somebody else, unless they have the identical version of printer
driver installed and set as the default and the exact same version of the
fonts used, you will have to partially correct the formatting of the
document.
