When I try to open any word docs I get the error message it is not available.
When I got to close out of the empy Word window, it tells me the file
Normal.dot already exists, do I want to change it.  I click NO, then try to
close the window again and it takes me to the Template folder to save the
doc.  I click Cancel.  The next attempt at closing the window is 'changes
have been made to the global template Normal.dot, do I want to save, I click
No.  I tried going to Run and opening with the winword.exe /a and I got the
same thing.  I see where to get the startup path but am unclear on how to
change the file names to see if that help.   Help!!  I run a business out of
my home and need to access these docs!!  Thank you!

Disable the Office Plugin that comes with Symantec/Norton AntiVirus. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office programs with
the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more info.

If there is a Norton icon in your system tray (to the left of the clock
at the bottom right corner of your screen), what happens if you
right-click on it?  Do you see an option to Configure Norton Antivirus?

Can you click on Start | All Programs | Norton Antivirus?  If not, did
you previously uninstall Norton?

No, I don't have an icon on the tray and I cannot open it from the start
menu.  I tried to do a system restore to an earlier date and it didn't
complete, said I had to pick another day.  After talking with tech support at
CDW, they think I may have a virus due to the fact that I cannot access
Norton utility as well as Word docs.  I did email a doc to another computer
and it opened it fine.

I do weekly AV scans, as of last Friday nothing was found....

Hi, I am having the same problem, Word worked fine before
I removed Norton's and I began using another Virus
program.  Word is a very important as I use it to create
a newsletter and my deadline is approching fast.
Thanks in advance
Janey

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details on the
unregister command if you need them:
