Slow loading of Word and documents

I have Office 2003 installed on my computer. All the applications except
Word load and are operational within a few seconds. Word however, seems to
take an eternity to load in. When I ask it to open a new document, it seems
to freeze for about 20 seconds before opening. Similar things happen when I
close a document, it takes about 20 seconds before it closes.
To close Word takes over 30 seconds, whereas the other programs in the suite
close almost immediately.

Does anybody know what I can do to speed the program up?

I have used Word since 97 version and never experienced anything like this
before.

I read somewhere (don't remember where) that a possible culprit is something
called "Microsoft Add-in for Word", and that removing this software will
rectify the speed issues that so many people (myself incuded) have.  Before
doing this, I'd like to know just what an add-in is and whether removing it
will cause more problems than it resolves.
