On certain documents that have, previously, been known to
be good now give me the following message on any machine
I try and open them from.

"The document name or path is not valid. try these
suggestions 1)check file permissions 2)Use file open
dialog box."

The problem is sporadic and I can't find any pattern to
what could be causing this.  These users have been using
Office XP on 2000pro for approx. a year and now 3 cases
of this have appeared in a month.  They DO keep these
docs in Sourcesafe so my gut tells me that Sourcesafe
somehow may be the cause of this problem. Our environment
is strict so most computers are clean of unnecessary apps
and we do have antivirus. I tried opening them in safe
mode but could not. ANY suggestions would be appreciated.

Look for the previous postings on Office XP and NortonAV.

I had to uninstall Office XP

Was there a reason you could not disable the "Office Plug-in" in
Norton rather than uninstalling Office?

I just recently started having this problem but only with
attachments sent to me.  I can open .doc saved to my hard
drive but if someone now sends me a.doc I get the
error, " the document name....invalid".  This didn't used
to happen.  I have people send me attachments in the .rtf
format and Word will open those.  I read thru the FAQ and
other articles but none fit my problem.  I'm going to
uninstall and reinstall the whole thing to see if that
fixes the problem.  If anyone can think of why this is
happening I would be greatful.

Note that reinstalling Word is very unlikely to help. Are you trying to open
these attachments directly from the email, or are you saving them to a
document folder first?
